I want my hair like the girl on the right.

I usually put it in braids to try and get this look and let them dry and take them out, but it doesn't work that great.

Ask your hairdresser to cut your hair to the right lengths and then request some advice. They'll be pretty helpful- hairdressers get alot of celebrity requests.
