I've had micros and box braids and thinking about trying dredlocks for a change. My hair is very thick and healthy. Any suggestions before I give up and shave it all off!? :(

Dont get dreds, I dont want to tell you what to do but having the type of hair you aquired it will be almost impossible to get them out. And, if you have ever talked to a stylist about anytime they have cut dreds out, when the dreds are in for a certain amount of time, once they are cut in half, and whitish powder will come out, this is mold, yes, mold, i've had to cut some out with it in it, because washing your hair with the dreds in, no matter what you do, they dont dry completely (unless they are small, but even then) through so mold will form. And yes it is very gross. How short is your hair, do you ever wrap it? Chemically relax it? If you can find a good stylist to relax it and use good products, it really is not as bad and you may think. Or if you like to wear it curly but your curl are out of control or too frizzy alot of african american women get perms to define their curl.

ew i do not like them they look all dirty and stinky...dont shave it off either. your lucky you got thick healthy hair...work it honey love it....try a ifferent style but ewww not dred locks.....

Check with someone who has dredlocks about how to wash them. I've heard different things on how to cleanse them properly and I'm not sure the best way for that. Other than that, think a few times. That is kinda the last thing before shaving it off!

It's something new for you ....try them and if you don't like them get rid of them....I suggest you stop someone you see or a few people with the dreds in their hair and ask them of the pro's and cons of the style......that should help.....although I wore my head shaved for a while and loved it! LOL.....really!

Have a Salon do something more sophisticated (PLZ)..............I've seen many simple styles that look casually cute ~ not dirty like dreaklocks.

Suggestion: If you don't wanna have to comb your hair for a couple of years, go for it.

But if you want a good alternative, there some synthetic thick extensions that you can buy to make rough twist. It fast and easy to do, the texture is just like the natural hair, and no one can tell if they're braids.

I think they're called loc extensions.

Yes, I agree with the others about mold being created with traditional locks. This is largely do to products like gels and waxes and they can never be thoroughly washed from the hair. Another alternative is Sisterlocks. This is a more sophisticated way of locking the hair, no gels or wax needed and you can wash your hair immediately after their made. hi im a black woman 2 an i hav d same problem this can be very fustrating. locks can make ur hair thin out after a while from the constant interlocking or palm roll, what u can do is try braiding ur hair and then stitch on some deep weave or some other form of human hair it gives u a new look every time or try a short wig ,works 4 me
