I have a daughter who is mixed with Dominican/Putero Rican on her father's side and white on mine, she has really, really curly hair but it is soft like my hair and not heavy enough for the curls to drop so I have to keep it short because if I don't it looks like she stuck her finger in the outlet. God Bless her she is beautiful, but she is in the 2nd grade and sees all of her friends with long hair and wants extensions. I don't know anything other than that it can either be sewn in or braided in, which is better? I have heard it can damage the hair and I don't want that either! Is there any suggestions on what I can do, use, or a method that will be best for the health of her hair?

When I first saw this question I thought it was a joke. How the hell does a 6 year old even know what hair extensions are? Tell her to wait 10 years. Just explain to her she does not have that kind of hair.

My wife gets extensions for fullness, and they are EXTREMELY expensive (about $250 every 6 weeks) and that's just half the head. What they do is use real human hair and glue it with a strong bond to the person's natural hair. You can see that they are extensions if she doesn't part it just right, and not only that, but it is very damaging to the hair, especially when they are being taken out. Sewn in and braided in just looks gross.

Taking care of them is more than a 6 year old can handle. You can only use a special brush, it's easy to fidget with them, and you can't use regular shampoo and conditioner on them or you will weaken the bond. Instead, you have to spend about $50 on special bottles of shampoo and conditioner made specially for extensions. If you touch them too much, the bond also weakens and your hair is out within a couple of weeks.

Bottom line, she's WAY TOO YOUNG to be even thinking about altering her appearance like that. I think it's quite sad, really, that a 6 yr old is already fretting over the way her hair looks and even sadder that you are encouraging it.

And yes, by even considering it, you are encouraging it. If it's only ponytails you're worried about, go to the drug store and get those little clip in rings of hair.

Wow, what a coincidence! I just heard this story: My anunt's friend's daughter wanted her hair dyed(she's 4). And her father did it. I think it's a big mistake. U should get her those clip-extensions, they r like hair pins. U can get them off whenever u want, and it doesn't damage hair. Of course, u should consult the hair-dresser on how u pin them and don't pull hair. I think it's a good solution because she is only 6, and probably she will change her opinion in a week.

You are the parent, stick to your guns and tell her NO! You are right, keep telling her she is beautiful inside and out, and as she gets older she will realize that she was created the way she was for a reason. Her uniqueness will become an asset and she will see this.... Six years old is WAYYY toooooo young to start worrying about your appeal and trying to change the way you look... things will only get worse if you give in, it will confirm her fears that she is right about her "odd" looks. You are her biggest role model. Try to keep her focus on more important things, like school work and creativity, and if she doesn't like it, tough... sorry, but because you love her so much, you should not allow this or promote this unhealthy behavior so young.

Beautiful little girls need to know that they are just that, and there is nothing in the world synthetic that they need to do to enhance thier beauty.

I know they see it on t.v., and I know that these are what they look up to, but you are who she looks up to more, and set an example that she does not need weave to be beautiful.

At 6 years old, a girl should not even be considering body image or anything related. If she is getting teased, then this is different, but unless she is having a traumatic experience because she doesnt have long hair, then i cant believe that you'd even be considering it.

Shes a child. There shouldnt be an emphasised placed on looks. You need to encourage her to focus on playing, learning, having fun and being accepted unconditionally.

She doesnt have the maturity to be able to care for and maintain such a costly investment at any rate, and they will drive her mad being stuck to her scalp!

Well, there is a thing called a straightner. But dont put exstentions in hair!! I would love to have curly hair! my hair so straight, but has little curl to it. Use a perm to straighten her hair if she wants straight hair. let it grow out a little to use the straightner. I read a story like this once, It's call "Miss Understanding" by Stephanie Lessing, a girl had red curly hair that stuck out like a clown. You are her mother you can stop her if you want although u will make her feel sad.The best thing to do by my opinion is the followings:

1.you can straighten her hair with a blow dryer make sure it has a comb on it in low heat. it will look much longer cause the curls will loosen but always use a ''heat protective serum'' before that.

2.If you want extensions again then let the hair dresser braid the synthetic /natural hair a little on your daughters hair then leave the rest hair free ,then curl it let her add hair only on the back side to look longer .you don't need to full up her hair( i think the hairstyle is called pick and drop braid) Dont let them make the braids to tight otherwise the hair will break i think this type of extension is more safe than weave in or the glue one.

3.let her now that she's unique and everyone loves her such as she is and tell her to not feel inferiority because of short hair I'm a teen and i had the same problem and i overcome it but as time goes i know and i hope that she will become use to herself too

It's better to not do extension because of her age but if she truly can't stay without it what can i say?
